Bryan's Bad Back

The diet has not been very difficult to cope with. One of the great advantages of this competition is that since both of us are participating and I have no other friends in the area I don't have any temptation to go out to eat. So I try to keep my calorie count between 1200 and 1800 per day. I've estimated (through internet assistance) I burn upwards of 3400 calories per day. That equates to a pretty decent calorie deficit.
Exercise is going alright. I joined the local gym; its pretty much a YMCA. I expect to do High Intensity Interval Training every few days (sprints on the treadmill) combined with basketball on off days, weights (only for my arms, I want to lose leg mass), and calisthenics (jump rope, pushups, and situps). Apparently I need to do more stretching and yoga: I have back spasms from playing basketball yesterday. So I am very out of shape and weak. After I get my endurance up I'll start long distance running as well.

Exercise:
Monday- HIIT on treadmill
Tuesday- Basketball (shooting around), Jump Rope, Exercise Bike (20 minutes), Biceps and triceps with free weights
Wednesday- More than 2 hours of basketball with my little brother
Thursday- Bad back; day off in the sauna

Diet:
Monday- (1100 calories) Boca Chicken with Salsa- Boca is a vegetarian brand, Boca Tacos, Nuts, Vitamin Water 10
Tuesday- (1855) Toast, V8, Nuts, Boca Tacos, Soup, Banana, Popcorn
Wednesday- (1675) Nuts, Boca Chicken, Salad, Toast, V8, Popsicle, Yogurt
Thursday- (1410) Nuts, Popcorn, Chicken and Vegetables, Vitamin Water, Boca Tacos

My diet will be roughly the same stuff over and over again, from now on I will only report calorie intake and new stuff that I haven't listed before or things that are bad for me.

A Word From the Commissioner...

The Commish

Gentlemen and readers,

As general purpose commissioner of this and all competitions, I'd like to wish both participants the best of luck. In the coming weeks and months, I will be performing interviews with both parties in order to see how progress (or lack thereof) is going.

What I'd like to ask of both of you is to keep detailed logs of your food and portion size intake on this blog, along with your musings and erotic haikus. Also, it might be a good idea to also keep some log of exercise up as well (action and length of time). I'd like to be able to take that data and crunch it in a pertinent way for a weekly update chart or string of insults.

Beyond that, I'll keep everyone informed of league developments, weight loss competition infractions, and day-to-day events here at the Commissioner's Office. Hopefully, one of you will die via this competition, and I'll be able to transition my detailed notes into a wonderful screenplay, while your estate sees zero of the proceeds.

Once again, boys, good luck.

Also, you're fat. Stop it.

Sincerely,

Andrew K.
Commissioner

Some Thoughts on the First Few Days

1) I have a newfound hatred for the marketing departments of fast food restaurants and junk-food companies. I find myself constantly wanting to eat their food even when I'm not hungry. Why aren't there laws against this?
2) Tasty food and healthy food are two mutually exclusive categories. Anyone who says different is lying to themselves. How many people are going to tell me to try some food that is supposed to be healthy? Either the food ends up tasting like cardboard (i.e. fat-free cheese) or isn't really healthy.
3) I'm out of shape. This may play out to be in my favor since I have more room for improvement. Time will tell.
4) My plan is to restrict my diet more now and jump out to an early lead. Hopefully that will demoralize Bryan. If I can lose 7-8 pounds in the first week, I'll consider myself in a good position to win.

It Begins...

This battle began on June 15, 2009.

It started as an offhand comment by Jay, and as is sometimes the case I decided to follow through on it because it was a good idea. Which one of us can lose the most weight? We both have different motivations for participating in the contest, which will be discussed if this blog is actually maintained, but we also share a common motivation: winning!

I wanted to motivate the two of us (mostly Jay), so that we would see this thing through. So the reward had to be tantalizing and the penalty significant. We decided that we would put a Playstation 3 and a Flat Screen Television on the line. Details to follow on the specifics. If we lose the same amount of weight we will split the cost alternately we will pay a percentage based on our weight loss in relation to eachother.

The competition is divided into two 3 month portions. The first is for the PS3 and the second for the television. The second portion is for overall weight loss not the second portion alone. As an advantage I am giving Jay straight pounds, rather than a percentage of weight lost (a la biggest loser). We felt that with our relative lifestyles that would be the most fair.

Alright on to the BEFORE:

Bryan- 214.2 lbs
Jay- 247.4 lbs
